Stomp explores the face and the gaze in the context of destruction, questioning how we connect and identify with the other. The work began as a personal response to the destruction at Bamiyan and Timbuktu, Palmyra and Aleppo. Such recent manifestations of fascism have twentieth-century antecedents in the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide, but trace even further back in human consciousness: there is a long history of attempting to erase people from memory.

Stomp seeks to reach beyond a sense of despair and engage our shared humanity, calling on powers of empathy and universal understanding that survive any detachment from individual identity. Viewed through that lens, the violence of human action becomes merely an acceleration of the disappearance wrought by time itself.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
