A fictional account by Carole Naggar of two extraordinary parallel lives: the photographer and co-founder of Magnum, David “Chim” Seymour, and Tereska Adwentowska, the Polish girl who was the subject of one of his best-known pictures.

In September 1948, on assignment for UNICEF on the children of Europe, Chim photographed Tereska in a primary school in Warsaw. Millions saw the picture when it ran in LIFE that December and were moved by her fate: during the Wola massacre she had been wounded by shrapnel.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
