Mario Giacomelli was born on 1 August 1925 in Senigallia, in the Marche, where he died on 25 November 2000, a self-taught master.

The Sassoferrato archive holds some twelve thousand of his works, made with various printing techniques, together with their contact sheets and negatives. Its mission is to provide a philological framework for them in the context in which he worked, offering a unique all-round view of an artist whose path and way of working have been relatively unknown until now. It promotes a new way of looking at him by highlighting his method: the coherent structure that encompasses his entire production and constitutes his style. For him art and life were intrinsically linked, and each series was made in close connection with the ones before.
