Evidence obtained by law enforcement agencies during raids on illegal brothels and sex clubs in Ukraine, and published in open sources. Raided is a continuation of the effort of the anonymous artist Counterfuture, who has a background in international law enforcement and investigation, to explore visual material that does not come out of the artistic field. The source material is operational photography and footage produced by Ukrainian law enforcement agencies and uploaded to the agencies' social media accounts for everyone to see. The viewer is invited to participate in a forceful invasion of a work space, following often masked authority into a tightly controlled realm as they break down doors, arrest alleged criminals and confiscate evidence with little respect for the privacy of the subjects, whose faces have been blurred in this publication. An institutional ritual is played out in real life, consolidating the dominant position of the law. In Raided the chronology of events is deliberately altered by stripping the images of their spatial and temporal context, in order to ask questions about the current state of relations between state and citizens, about media, and about the voyeuristic depiction of uncertainty, vulnerability and fear: what can operational visual material tell us about human relationships, what is it proof of, how much of it is staged, and what is the role of such material as a witness?

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
