Photographs accompanied by quotations

Made between 1979 and 1981, and gathered as a monograph here for the first time. In black-and-white pictures each carrying a quotation, Knorr sets out the relations of class and of power among the very rich in London at the start of Thatcherism, and the daily life of a privileged minority is looked at critically and satirically. In her own words these are non-portraits, in the sense that they make no attempt to flatter the sitters or to show their truth.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
