The existence of brothels inside Nazi concentration camps came to light only in the 1990s, almost fifty years after the end of the war. Mazzoleni works with archive photographs and with short narrative and poetic texts to hold that fact in view: the entanglement of sexual pleasure with exploitation, and the many aspects of it that are still unknown. What interests her is the elusiveness of the memory itself, so she twists the photographs to show how thought rereads history. What is left is a dreamlike, solitary landscape that seems unaware of its own historical reasons, and a reader turning pages with the tact and the voyeurism of a witness.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
