Influenced by Weegee’s gritty street photography, Brassaï’s Paris and the work of Jill Freedman and Walker Evans, these black and white portraits are late-night flashes capturing the energy of downtown Savannah, Georgia after dark. Emily Earl uses a Polaroid ProPack camera and Fujifilm FP-3000B instant film to document the people who frequent the bars in this swampy city, where it is legal to leave with your drink and go out into the streets. The streets and sidewalks are where people really meet: a show of fashion, lust and loneliness that closes each night only when the house lights come on.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
