Text by Alana Celii

Observing the natural world, Alana Celii has become a collector, gathering images whose subjects are scattered or widespread. Like jazz, these images exist through improvisation, syncopation and rhythm, their meaning developed through fluidity and abstraction, but also rooted in memory and the desire for the past to go away. The images are paired with vignettes of writing that explore the loss of a relationship, the loss of what home means and the feeling of being unmoored after ten years of drifting. The figures in the book are metaphors drawing on astrology, myth and symbolism.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
