Rachel Cox documented the final years of her grandmother’s life as she suffered from a degenerative brain disease. The images were made during moments of conversation, gesture and experiences of death; the variety of approaches, performative or candid, reflects a frantic need to record every aspect of her, hoping these moments could be pieced together into a truer portrait. Theirs was a tumultuous relationship of missed connections, but the photographs reveal a deeper language they had been sharing for years, made of mutual vulnerability and trust, acted upon even in death.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
