Ave Maria, a Catholic-inspired community in a remote area of southwest Florida, and the infrastructure that supports its founders’ utopian vision. Tom Monaghan, who spent half his childhood in a Catholic orphanage, built Domino’s Pizza into a thriving corporation; after reading C.S. Lewis’s warnings against pride he divested himself of many possessions to focus on “getting as many people into heaven as possible”. Denied zoning in Michigan for a college campus with a 25-storey crucifix, he accepted nearly 1,000 acres from the developer Barron Collier Companies to build Ave Maria University and a speculative town around it, made possible by legislation pushed by Governor Jeb Bush. The town continues to grow slowly, but will most likely never meet its founders’ expectations.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
