An artist’s publication by the Brazilian artist Jonathas de Andrade. Part of his solo show at Kunsthalle Lissabon, titled Posters for the museum of the northeast man, yet standing on its own, the book refers to the Museu do Homem do Nordeste, an ethnographic museum founded in the artist’s home city of Recife in the late 1970s by the sociologist and writer Gilberto Freyre. Approaching working-class men in the streets of Recife, or placing advertisements in the local papers for men to be photographed for the museum’s posters, Jonathas de Andrade set up an ambivalent relation both with the men and with the identity they were asked to embody, through the anthropophagous and eroticised gaze of the lens. The posters, showing men at different everyday occupations, try to explore, question and reassess what lies behind the construction of a regional identity — that of the northeastern Brazilian — and what it means today.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
