In 1983 the English photographer Janette Beckman was already known as a chronicler of alternative cultures. On assignment in Los Angeles, where she was documenting the West Coast punk scenes, she came across an article in the LA Weekly about El Hoyo Maravilla, a gang in East LA. She contacted the journalist and persuaded him to take her to Hoyo Maravilla Park. The result of that meeting is a series of tender, intimate portraits of a closed community that lived in permanent danger, in conflict with the police and with other gangs. First issued in 2011 by Dashwood, this reconceived edition from the same house adds previously unseen pictures.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
