The third volume by the Japanese photographer is a diary in saturated colour. After her first two, now out of print, Dildo (2013) and Bible (2014), Ilmatar is the first of her works to be issued in Japan. In it Okabe explores, in an intimate and ultra-coloured series, her experience as an asexual and non-binary woman and her ties to her circle of friends. At once memoir and life journal, the volume alternates nudes and landscapes, and unfolds a body of work around her pregnancy, from artificial insemination to the birth of her first child.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
