The Gilets jaunes movement appeared in France in October 2018 and gave rise to demonstrations held every Saturday across the country, in Paris above all around the Étoile roundabout and the Champs-Élysées. The inhabitants and shopkeepers of the district then began to fit protections over shop windows and the windows of flats. On Sundays, the mornings after the demonstrations, Anna Malagrida and Mathieu Pernot photographed these boarded-up façades: panels of plywood and chipboard, sometimes painted or written on, that turned the avenue into a temporary architecture of fear and of protest.
