Thirty years of work

The book that documents an extraordinary journey in search of the roots of our history. Introduced by four texts, it shows the result of a project unlike any other: thirty years of work spent exploring and portraying, with tenacity and continuity, some of the most representative and important archaeological sites of the Mediterranean. More than a hundred spectacular panoramic images retrace a search backwards in which the author, like a new Ulysses, visited dozens of places that stand as symbols of ancient history, as in a modern Odyssey. The black-and-white frames were made in Syria, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Cyprus north and south, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, France, Albania, Croatia and of course Italy. Page after page the images give an unusual and deeply personal reflection on antiquity, on landscape and on a beauty that stirs and feeds thought. The pictures are accompanied by the impressions of writers, thinkers and philosophers who long before saw the same places and entrusted them to words.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
