For the first time reissued in pocket format, Atlas des Régions Naturelles Vol.4 is the fourth instalment of a photographic undertaking as singular in scale as in duration. Begun six years earlier, its ambition is to document, with equal attention, the 450 natural regions or "pays" that make up French territory. Starting from these small geographic and cultural entities - the Artois, the Morvan, the Béarn - Eric Tabuchi and Nelly Monnier patiently and meticulously describe how we occupy, inhabit and shape landscape: roads, houses, shops, trades, shop-sign typography, village names, tracking both what recurs and what strays from the norm, the crossing of which defines a physiognomy of our ways of living. Composed of sixteen chapters alternating three regions with one theme, this pocket edition reproduces in full the fourth volume originally published in large format, its chapters running from Argonne and Bresse bourguignonne to Vallespir, Velay and a closing chapter on the Eiffel Tower.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
