A thirtieth-anniversary tribute to Taylor Hackford's cult film, released as Bound by Honor in 1993, which follows three members of the fictional East L.A. gang Vatos Locos over ten years during the 1970s and into the 1980s: Cruz, a painter who develops a tragic drug addiction, Paco, a boxer turned police officer viewed as a traitor, and Miklo, an Anglo kid with some Mexican ancestry desperate to fit in who ends up in a dangerous Chicano prison gang. The film's wide-ranging portrayal of East Los Angeles Chicano sensibilities and powerful identity struggles has earned it a place in classic L.A. cinema, rescued from obscurity by fervent Latino audiences after it stumbled at the box office. The limited-edition book gathers production materials with hundreds of unseen behind-the-scenes photographs and film stills shot by the on-set photographer Merrick Morton, paintings by the late San Antonio artist Adan Hernandez, whose mural Carnalismo appears in the final scene, and original poems by the screenwriter Jimmy Santiago Baca. It is a companion to the film and a love letter to Los Angeles and to the cast and crew.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
