Simulacre is an Augmented Reality enabled book that challenges the viewer to re-examine how they perceive photography, construction and digital art, forming its own genre. The works were created from Dhiren Dasu's travel photographs: photo collages that juxtapose inanimate architecture and objects, reconstructing elements of a man-made world so that they read as faces, human, android, robot or animal, and it takes a viewer to complete the artifice of sentience. Bil Brown calls it a considered travel diary of the faces of a neo-constructivist worldview, a labour and a creation made of places and points in time, while Penny Slinger notes how humour blends with satire in Dasu's poetic commentaries. His personalised collage assembly reveals not only the beauty but the character of the places it dissects and reconstructs into a new landscape that you cannot unsee. A coin-operated binocular viewer opens the book, and a double page set in the Las Vegas strip pairs a martini glass sign with a casino mirrored into a face.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
