For five years the photographer Brian Finke documented StreetBeefs, an underground fight club in rural Virginia founded by an ex-con known as Scarface. Tired of seeing his community ravaged by preventable violence and drug use, and fuelled by distrust of the prison system, Scarface began hosting fights and inviting anyone to settle disputes with their fists rather than guns. Thousands of fights later, the Yard has grown into a cult destination and a supportive community: a positive space for conflict resolution and an outlet for recovering addicts and ex-convicts, amateur fighters, the young and bored, and anyone needing to relieve stress by punching someone in the face. In Backyard Fights Finke captures the personalities, drama and grit, moving between his signature hyper-realistic style and a softness that finds the unsuspected grace of each moment, with bloodied faces, tattooed fighters, kisses after bouts and bodies lit in red and blue. As one fighter puts it, you fight it out and then you hug it out, and you become friends.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
