To celebrate ten years of Big Ears, the art and music festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, AC Entertainment, the Rock Fish Stew Institute of Literature and Materials, the Southern Documentary Fund and Hat & Beard Press worked with the artist Kate Joyce, who photographed the festival and the people and surroundings of Knoxville over five years, to create a time capsule of the festival's performances and of the lyrical and visual language of the city, the Knoxville of Cormac McCarthy's Suttree and James Agee's A Death in the Family. The book consists of sixty-nine colour and black-and-white photographs made under the influence of the music, in intimate venues and on the streets, a preface by the music critic Ben Ratliff, essays by the musicians Rachel Grimes and Joe Henry and exclusive streaming access to recordings of performances from 2014 to 2018. Joyce photographed only some of the more than two hundred artists who played, among them Kronos Quartet, Terry Riley, Julia Holter, Omar Souleyman and Jóhann Jóhannsson, often only a sound check or rehearsal, since much of the music was better heard than seen; Big Ears Knoxville made its debut at the festival in March 2019.
