A zine devoted to the house of the photographer David Armstrong, recalled by Brett Lloyd, who stayed there. In his words, waking up in CandyLand was like waking from a dream you are not sure you are out of: a cabinet of doll heads at the foot of the stairs had climbed up three flights overnight, a shop mannequin that winced at guests by the front door was poised outside the bedroom, and a Billie Holiday record skipped somewhere in the house. His favourite room was the one where Armstrong's outstanding prints were kept, propped against walls, stacked in piles and curled in glass vases, where the enormity of the talent hits you and the heartbreaking portraits make the quiet house seem to fall even quieter. Lloyd recalls how that gift for conjuring calm made Armstrong himself so charismatic, and the generous encouragement he gave the young people he provided a home for.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
