Pictures made on commission for the Sharjah Biennial 8 in the United Arab Emirates in 2007. Camels and people stand and wander beneath a pale sky. Rika Noguchi balances the small differences in scale between the animals, which depend on her distance and on the positions of the subjects, and the images keep a free and natural feeling throughout. Her approach, which has explored the relationship between places and people since the early 1990s, resembles a journey in pursuit of the logic of a reality built from accumulated accidents.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
