A book that looks like a magazine left lying about outside time, in which waterfalls and gorges photographed by moonlight appear paired with women's bodies: water flowing deep in pitch darkness, bodies afloat. The title comes from the Latin word for mother and source, the root also of the word for tree trunk and, as the book points out, of water, and it calls back to these origins of life. As water and bodies resonate, the earth that nurtures life and the human body overlap, a quiet reflection of beings joined inseparably. The series follows Quinault (1990, a sacred forest of the Native Americans), the forest of Yakushima (2011) and Apple Tree (2017) in a journey tracing the origin of life, treating nature and people as equals and looking at how the world came to be and at the transience that permeates our impermanent lives.
