A series photographed along the ancient headwaters that flow through Yakushima. The attempt that began with Materia, to photograph the source of life itself, has gradually changed shape and now approaches the root of life. Shigeo Goto writes that the water, plants and stones, formless, blurred and turned into masses of light, are nevertheless thrust before our eyes as intense images: this is no mere play of effects but an objectification and visualisation of the act of seeing. The work is characterised by sacrificing the detail essential to photography in order to concentrate on the life and energy of joy that appear behind it, while other pictures taken at the same place show a richness of detail so exact that it provokes strangeness. The book takes the viewer on an abstract journey into the wilderness: a series of blurred images of the river, followed by a series of clear images, ending with another set of blurred ones, an experiment in how we look, not just at these photographs but at the world in general. 20 works.
