Wuhan before Wuhan records the transformation, both personal and photographic, of the Spanish photographer Jorquera, who arrived in the Chinese city in 2007, when it was still unknown in the West. Jorquera had chosen an inland city, far from megacities such as Beijing or Shanghai, in order to settle, to create bonds and to focus on a more manageable space and context. But the lack of references and of communication led him to isolation, and this to disorientation. Thus arises a more introspective journey, turned inwards, in which Wuhan represents something very basic and at the same time universal.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
