Since the early eighties Andres Serrano has dealt in his images with the most controversial and polemical issues of the contemporary world. El dedo en la llaga gathers the works of the exhibition co-produced by ARTIUM, the Tecla Sala centre in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and PHotoEspaña, the first retrospective held in Spain on his work. Bodily fluids, exclusion, fanaticism, religion, illness and death are present in the series shown in this book, among them Nomads, The Klan, Budapest and The Morgue. Perhaps for that reason his work has often been seen through the prism of controversy, as when his name became internationally famous after two senators denounced his work Piss Christ (1987) in the United States Senate in 1989. The force of his images rests on the mechanisms of advertising: on the use of lighting and, above all, of language, in the precision of the titles and in the use of words in a way that is both brief and eloquent. Andres Serrano (New York, 1950) has received the Gold Medal of the Art Directors Club.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
