Barzacchi, Branzi, Camisa, Casiraghi, Cattaneo, Chini, De Antonis, De Biasi, Donzelli, Farabola, Giacomelli, Gilardi, Migliori, Pasquali, Patellani, Petrelli, Pinna, Roiter, Samugheo, Sellerio, Sorrentino, Volta, Zavattini and Zovetti are some of the authors in this edition, which shows the role of photography at the height of the neorealist movement in Italy. The book is divided into four sections. Realism in the Fascist era shows how the Fascist revolution used photography as a means of mass communication, with images as proof of Mussolini's statements, though there is also room for images showing the backwardness, poverty and popular customs of the country. Misery and reconstruction presents works born of the need to build a new identity, while Investigating the territory records the appearance of new illustrated publications, ethnographic studies and the wish to know how people live in distant provinces. Photojournalism and the illustrated press shows how photography was used to tell current events and as an instrument to learn about faraway places.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
