In this first-person compilation of his work, Basilico becomes a visionary of twentieth-century architectural reality. From Milan, Madrid and Beirut to Naples, Berlin or Barcelona, he sets out to portray and rebuild the identity of the cities he visits through emblematic or characteristic buildings. Basilico begins a chronological account in which he recalls how photography attracted him in 1963, in the classrooms of the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano, to the point of interrupting his studies to devote himself to the art of portraying the soul of cities. He remembers the influence of Aldo Rossi and his book The Architecture of the City, which determined his beginnings in photography in 1973, and goes through his most outstanding published series, such as Milan, portraits of factories (1978-1980), Bord de Mer, on the transformation of the French landscape in the eighties, and Seaports, a personal project devoted to the ports of southern and northern Europe. One of his most characteristic works is the one made in Beirut in 1991, at the request of the writer Dominique Eddé, together with Robert Frank, Fouad Elkoury, Josef Koudelka, René Burri and Raymond Depardon.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
