Frontera de África gathers the photographs taken on the border between Spain and Africa in the 1920s, while the author made a living producing postcards and commissions for the military world. The images are completed by a text by the exhibition curator, Alejandro Castellote. The legacy of Bartolomé Ros runs through a historical period that begins at the end of the Moroccan war and the start of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. The book shows images of visits by illustrious figures to the Spanish protectorate, meetings between Franco and the founder of the Legion, Millán Astray, and the moments before the uprising of the Spanish army in Morocco against the Second Republic. Ros's chronicles captured moments of great importance but also the scenes of the daily life of anonymous soldiers, rendered with the documentary responsibility that characterised the European photographers of the time. Bartolomé Ros lived in Ceuta from 1918 until the mid-fifties.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
