In 2020 Merel Hegenbart met Doro, a young Croatian woman who had moved into a room down the corridor of her flat, and the encounter became an eight-month multimedia project about Doro's freedom, photography and the evolving relationship between them. Photographs, film stills, WhatsApp conversations, transcribed exchanges, scanned postcards and personal notes are ordered chronologically in a 1,800-page book, each copy hand-bound in about eight hours. The book asks what photography reveals, conceals, constructs or distorts, and reflects on womanhood, freedom and the strength of female connection between two young women from Croatia and the Netherlands.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
