"It is not down in any map; true places never are" (Melville, Moby-Dick). Between 2013 and 2023 Matteo Di Giovanni made several rambling medium-format photographic journeys off the beaten path through Italy, Scandinavia and Northern Europe, roadtrips in which map and territory give way to intuition and curiosity. The book re-sequences this decade of work, first released as three standalone photobooks, adds previously unpublished images and frames it as a single body in which place and chronology are secondary: intimate, mythic landscapes, vast and open still lifes, interchangeable interiors and exteriors, and a pervasive sense of water as the photographer chases something — home, self, truth — that may be elusive.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
