There was an uncertain light. It may have been dawn, or after sunset. The sky was pale with a touch of red. The landscape reminded him of an old oil painting, a rural scene, dark and desolate. The foliage of the trees loomed like clouds while the trunks threw thin shadows that accompanied them along one side of the road.
