During the 2016 US Presidential elections, Japanese photographer Fumi Nagasaka became intrigued by the rural and southern USA. She had lived in New York City for a decade but, despite travelling the world, had yet to visit the rest of the country. All this changed when her friend Tanya Rouse invited her to her hometown of Dora, Alabama. Nagasaka continued to visit Dora over several years, gradually building a photographic archive of her visits, a selection of which is included in this book. 'I can only describe Alabama in three words: family, God and football. Family is everything. It brings a sense of belonging, love, joy and community that keeps us unified.' Working as an outsider welcomed into a close-knit community, Nagasaka made intimate portraits of the people of Dora and the surrounding area of Walker County—teenagers, families and elders—building a tender, long-form study of small-town life in the American South and the bonds that hold it together.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
