Since 2012, photographer Mark Power has been travelling across the United States building a layered visual account of a country in flux. Good Morning, America (Volume IV), the fourth instalment in his five-book series, continues this long-term exploration of America’s cultural and physical landscapes.

For this chapter, Power moved through the Midwest—Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming—before heading to Colorado, and later made further journeys to Alaska and parts of the Northeast, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and upstate New York. The book brings together new and earlier images, arranged as part of an ongoing process that Power compares to assembling a vast, uncertain jigsaw puzzle.

This volume marks a subtle shift in tone across the series. Human presence becomes more visible within the landscape, softening the sense of isolation that dominated earlier books and introducing a quieter optimism. Set against the backdrop of political change following the election of Joe Biden, the work reflects a country that feels less turbulent on the surface, yet still deeply divided beneath it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
