Text by Denis Dormoy

That’s Fernande, a good creature. You can trust him. We haven't had many like that. A real good cow's heart, a cream, easy to live with. No sudden tail swipes or traitorous paws when you are there milking her, your cheek glued to the broad scent of her smooth, warm coat. It must be said that we both get along well, I make conversation with him, I tell him about my little troubles and the rest too. And then I know about trafficking. It started when I was a kid, in the evening after school, then in the morning before going to school, I had to help, I loved it, I had to lend a hand. A helping hand, that’s it. You have to have a hand so that the milk squirts from the teat, a delicate and firm hand at the same time. It's not given to everyone. When the photographer tried it the other day, luckily Fernande is a good beast, he squeezed, pulled, twisted her teats, he tortured her and he couldn't even get a drop of milk. Well, it's not his job, he tried, it's already good.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
