What type of sociability do associations invent? What very specific actions could define “participation”?

Cédric Martigny chooses to answer these questions photographically by placing words and exchange at the heart of these productions.

People are represented within each group in interactions, linked to each other by sequences of coordinating gestures (looks, poses, etc.).

Each association is thus defined individually by a set of interrelations where each individual also acts freely, in an original gesture and activity. These group portraits can therefore be seen as genre scenes which place everyday life and exchange relationships at the center of the representation.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
