Text by Bernard David

The lodges of the vine: where our roots hide.

In this sweet oration that Michel Zoladz sings for us, he shows us the hidden part of our landscapes. With his camera, a stubborn craftsman of black and white that reveals light, he celebrates the useless with magnificence.

Modernity, with its corollaries of profitability, speed, and efficiency, wanted to simplify everything to “build” practical and functional landscapes. The vineyard cabins are the opposite of this race towards the abyss, vigilant testimony to a time when man lived in harmony with nature, in humility.

The cabins not only look “good” in the landscape, they are the stubborn revealer of the deep meaning of our relationship to creation. As we reap the deadly fruits of modernity in full bloom, may this lucid and poetic meditation from Michel help us to return to the path of the vineyards and to contemplate, in the gentleness of the slopes of Menetou-Salon, these sentinels of another possibility.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
