For the 20th edition of the Photaumnales festival, which is part of the Cultural Olympiad, we asked the photographers who have accompanied us all these years to delve into their archives in search of an image that evokes a certain idea of sport. This request gave rise to questions and doubts on their part about the possibility of having taken photographs around sport, and which are not necessarily sports photography. The Playgrounds exhibition brings together 128 photographers, and 128 proposals that transport us across countries and cultures, to discover the landscapes and social practices of sport. The different and varied subjects and approaches testify to the sensitivity of photographers to approach this subject according to their artistic concerns. Everyone practicing in a more or less distant relationship with reality, to make space-time their creative playground, conducive to experimentation. In the end, these images are often part of the authors' approach, consistent with the rest of their work. By bringing together photographers around this collective project, Diaphane continues its mission of disseminating and promoting contemporary photography, while showing artists a friendship shared over these 20 editions of the Photaumnales festival.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
