BODIED unites an internationally diverse group of artists who, in positioning the body at the centre of their work, explore how our physical forms are shaped by the social worlds around us. The project began life as an exhibition at The Art Gallery of Western Australia in 2020 which featured the work of Gordon Bennett, Cheryl Donegan, Alin Huma and Cheiko Kawaguchi, Jani Ruscica, Kawita Vatanajyankur, and Wong Ping. In this book, curators Rachel Ciesla and Robert Cook present a collection of interviews with each of the exhibiting artists which explore how their practices intersect with current changing political and cultural contexts. BODIED is the first title in the series ‘Unclaimed Ideas’. Created as a series of paperback readers, ‘Unclaimed Ideas’ presents essays and interviews by leading voices and undiscovered talents who change the way we understand art and its relationship to the most critical issues in the world today.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
