Sportret bundles a selection of Klaas Jan van der Weij’s contribution to Dutch sports photography, with intriguing, humorous and surprising images and unbelievable anecdotes.

Van der Weij (Emmen, 1952) sees sport differently than others, always stumbling upon the uncanny, the luckless and the loneliness. He is not interested in the winning goal scorer, the joyful crowd or the decisive details: his pictures are intriguing, sometimes humorous and often moving, showing athletes in a way few others do.

The book gathers more than 200 images, among them Johan Cruijff, Epke Zonderland, Robert Gesink, Max and Jos Verstappen, Oranje, Frank Rijkaard, Usain Bolt, Greg LeMond, Dafne Schippers and many others.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
