In the time of the pandemic, when we were forced to step back and withdraw from the life we knew before, this body of work deals with the simulation of impressions we had gathered in the years before. Its content is formed around the expressions simulacrum and simulation, replacement, improvisation and damage.

The topics for the small studio simulations are inspired by the top charts of social media hashtags, which represent the manifold imagination of beauty in the medium, and this gave a wide playground of stereotypes to work with. Instead of a real sunset the artist shows the narration of a sunset; the real selfie is replaced by a figure. The aim is to scrutinise traditional procedures and to bend the established aesthetics.

The still lifes are complemented by pictures taken on the empty streets during the same period, showing details of imperfection, improvisation and damage; this emphasises the idea of abundance by creating a counterpoint. The work is accompanied by short quotations from The Tempest, in which the protagonists are cast up on a lonely island, a surrealistic place.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
