A workbook on displacement. Snaturamenti is both the object and the device of the volume made by Flatform, a collective working on the border between contemporary art and cinema. Transitional states of various kinds — spatial or temporal, geographical or historical, phenomenological or climatic — and the notion of landscape as a complex network of connections between human beings and other species form the base of their research.

The passage from the moving to the still image in book form generates in itself a snaturamento, literally an alteration of the nature of the original work, which nonetheless articulates itself into a new landscape where the initial meanings are displaced. Drawings, texts, diary entries, layers, frames, alternative sequences, backstage shots and installation renderings intersect with the group's video production, in a poetic and non-mimetic exercise of their cinematographic techniques, in order to narrate — and undermine — natural phenomena and laws of physics, redefine time and space, and create an unstable equilibrium between the foreseeable and the unexpected, between control and chance, between obsessive precision and stumbling accidents.

Not a concept book but a percept book, it uses a series of graphic artifices to place the reader back at the centre of a real experience of the landscape, and of a reading that is not contemplative but tangible and immersive.

“Image is that wherein what has been comes together in a flash with the now to form a constellation.” — Walter Benjamin

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
