Tripod on his shoulder and camera in hand, Marcel Fortini set out to conquer the memorials built for the men who, at the beginning of the last century, gave their lives to pass freedom on to those who followed. Tracing his route meticulously on ordnance maps, methodically listing the sites to record, he criss-crossed the island for several years, going over the territory again and again, to bear witness and pay homage with his eye, his heart and all his passion to the men of 1914.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
