To make these pictures the artist spent years driving through the vast, sparsely populated spaces of the American West, often sleeping in his car. The project was born of both passion and patience, and although he was initially inspired by the western meadowlark, the state bird of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Kansas and Nebraska, the bird proved elusive and appears here only once, as a crude likeness painted on a weathered scrap of plywood.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
