Born of a 1988 idea by Robert Delpire
In parole series
A rich selection of works by Henri Cartier-Bresson, made precious by contributions from writers, intellectuals, friends and admirers of the great master. In 1988 Robert Delpire, the editor of his books and his friend, decided to celebrate his eightieth birthday by asking intellectuals, writers, critics, fellow authors or simply close friends to choose and comment on one of his pictures. From that idea an exhibition soon came, opened the same year at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and over the years the series of images and words kept growing with new contributions and reflections. Among those commenting are Emil Cioran, Milan Kundera and Leonardo Sciascia, called to comment on three different pictures made in Spain in the same year, 1933: faces of ordinary people and children playing among rubble in a year when war is still far off yet somehow already present, like an inevitable sentence. One of the chief marks of his work is the capacity to describe a particular human condition without pity or rhetoric, as his fellow author Ferdinando Scianna observes about a picture made in Mexico in 1934, where a woman holds a sleeping child covered by a black veil.
