A volume without equal in Italy, published for the centenary of the birth of a master of photography: a journey through the archive of a complete artist. With three hundred and forty images in black and white and in colour, this is the full monograph devoted to an artist who all his life alternated painting and photography and proved a great interpreter of contemporary art. Texts by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo, directors of the Saul Leiter Foundation, and by Adam Harrison Levy, Michael Greenberg, Lou Stoppard and Asa Hiramatsu tell of his art, accompanied by a detailed chronology of his life and career. "I have no philosophy," he used to say. "I have a camera." Leiter disliked being interviewed and did not believe an artist’s words were a door into understanding the work; he was the true street photographer, the one who leaves the studio to run along the pavements and look for rhythm in neon signs or in the faces of passers-by, that rare kind of artist who opens new ground while keeping to the small wedge of world in front of his own door. Born in Pittsburgh in 1923 and meant to follow his father, a rabbi known for his studies of the Talmud, as a teenager Leiter left religious study behind.
