FotoNote series

The long-running FotoNote series takes in the updated edition of the volume devoted to Anders Petersen, in a new and colourful graphic dress. It holds a careful selection of the most telling images by one of the cult authors of European photography, introduced by a text from Christian Caujolle. Named photographer of the year at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2003, Petersen has for years been held a master of the medium, which lets him come into contact with human beings and above all with the excluded who are pushed to the margins of society. Born in Stockholm in 1944, he studied photography with Christer Strömholm, the father of Swedish photography, who soon turned from teacher into a great friend and went with him on his personal and photographic path. In 1967 Petersen began photographing the nights among prostitutes, transvestites, drunks, lovers and addicts in a bar in Hamburg, making a moving chronicle of daily life in images wrapped in a raw and honest poetic sadness that never sinks into voyeurism. In 1978 that work became a book, Café Lehmitz, which threw open the doors of success and became a cult title. Through his career he has gone on probing with an involved, disconcerting and deeply human eye.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
