The book accompanies the exhibition of the same name. People, with their culture, their past and their future — often distant and different — live together on the same planet, and not always peacefully. This journey through the work of Paolo Pellegrin tells of a humanity divided and broken. The volume is enriched by three texts whose words reflect on the role of his work and try to speak of that aching monochrome which portrays the daily life of a planet in pain and defeated by wars. There is a line by René Char in Feuillets d’Hypnos that brings contemporary work to mind, and his in particular: only the eyes are still able to throw out a cry. Looking at the images he made on Lesbos among the migrants, or in Gaza, in the refugee camps of the Middle East, in the countless scenes of war around us and in the American slums, one is led to think that he wants to make our eyes cry out.
