Page after page we follow the mystery of passionate devotion, the faith of mystics and poets, saints and the illiterate: the most mysterious moments, which leap the fences built by theologians and reveal a solid continuity we have unlearned to see, conditioned by the superficial impression of a clash of civilisations. If places are sacred, they are sacred to everyone; a good saint is good for everyone; and there are the gestures of prayer, the body as a channel to the Elsewhere, the body that holds collective memory and does not lie. The reportage is the fruit of long journeys through a parallel world, from Central Asia to Latin America, from the Russias to the Middle East, "crossing the thresholds between sacred and profane, light and shadow". In black and white and colour, with her own texts, the author seeks out the last oases where faiths meet, free zones where Muslims and Christians pray together, lands of age-old syncretism where the chain of revenge breaks: the Dionysian rites of the Muslims of the Maghreb, the lament for the dead in the Balkans, pilgrimages in the mud of the Urals, the exiled gods across the sea in Haiti and Cuba, where the spiritual force of mother earth becomes voodoo, santería, mystic rap and samba. She follows the "people of God", from Greek and Russian Orthodox to Shiites, from the Ethiopian church to Sufism, from mountain Jews to Italian and Polish Catholics. "Now I gather shards of a great broken mirror, fragments, perhaps bricks of the Tower of Babel."
