A short time ago the artist designed a new font of her own, an amalgamation of typefaces employed in a variety of earlier text-based works, including full stop sculptures, typeset wall pieces, and an epic account of a war remembered from memory. Concurrent with this creation, a fascination grew with the idiosyncratic double meaning of the word itself: in addition to a typeface, the same word names a receptacle for holy water used, chiefly, in baptismal ceremonies, with religious associations derived from an etymological root roughly translated as 'a fountain, a spring, or a source.' Images of baptismal and holy water vessels from churches around the world were subsequently gathered, and are presented here in their entirety for the first time: something of a supply catalog for the devoted, presenting every configuration imaginable, along with accompanying church names and location specs. The word points as much to a conceptual social contract as it does to a physical object, taking us beyond the ordinary into realms more indeterminate.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
